Should be interesting.

From: Victoria, Australia | posted: 11/7/2006 at 12:40:37 PM ET Hi! I don't post here often, but I visit this site quite often. I'm from Australia, and I was wondering if anyone could explain to me what the mid-term elections (if that's actually what they are called) are all about. Here in Australia, we vote once every four years to elect our prime minister, and he stays elected for the full four years, so I'm not really sure what mid-term elections in the states are for and what can happen as a result.
Also, in Australia, voting is compulsory- we have to enrol to vote once we turn 18. I understand that in America you have the choice as to whether or not you enrol. Once you have enrolled there, are you then obligated to vote at every election, or can you decide not to? Thanks! And happy voting- to those of you who choose to!

I think this website describes it better than I ever could.
Also, we are not required to register to vote or to vote if we are registered. It is a right or responsibility that is our choice to exercise.

From: Victoria, Australia | posted: 11/7/2006 at 1:48:24 PM ET Thank you for that- very imformative. I'm still a bit confused, but definately not as much as I was before. We have our state election coming up later this month which is when we vote for a state premier (or governor, I think it's called over there) and we also vote for local members of parliament. Can't say that I'm a huge fan of voting- I certainly appreciate the fact that I have the right and take it seriously- but by the time the day comes around for us to vote we've been subjected to weeks of campaigning, so I'm just tired of it. I can only stand so much mud-slinging. Thanks for your help.

| posted: 11/7/2006 at 4:26:34 PM ET We just have one election day for all elections - national, state and local. It just depends on the year as to who is being elected. So it sounds very similar to your country's situation.

From: northern VA | posted: 11/8/2006 at 7:43:52 AM ET Senate is still up for grabs-depends on Virginia and Montana. We might have a recount here in Virginia. But Webb (D) is confident. However, a recount would be a lengthy process.

There have been many moments over the last 4+ years that I have been ashamed to be a U.S. Citizen. Now maybe we can become the humble super power that this country needs to be and the world deserves.
